Five Basic Stances

(Sequence to Right)

Stance

Beginning

Feet together

Natural

Feet together

Move R foot to R, shoulder width from L. Bend knees slightly

Arms at sides

 

 

 

Horse

Move R foot to R, 1.5 shoulder width from L

Bend knees to lower body, knees out slightly

Bend elbows, bring hands to waist in fist

 

 

 

Cat

Shift weight to L foot. Rotate R foot to R, shift weight to R foot

Slide L toe to R and then forward, L toe down and just touching floor, R knee is bent

Release fist, palms up at waist.

Raise L arm, bend elbow, and palm out at shoulder height. Raise R arm. palm up at chest height

Modified Cat

Slide L foot forward, adjust R foot. Both feet fully touch ground.

Shift weight to both legs, knees bent (60% R, 40% L)

 

 

 

 

Transition

Shift weight forward to L foot, bring R foot forward and behind L foot with R heel off floor. (R knee is behind L knee) Bend knees to lower body

 

 

 

Rotate to R on L heel and R toe. Shift to R heel at 180 deg. Continue rotation until L knee is under R knee at about 360 deg of rotation.

Move L arm out from body to side. Move R arm down and then out. At about 270 deg rotation, move R arm forward, elbow bent, palm out. Bring L elbow to side with forearm forward, palm up

Archer

Bring L foot behind R foot and forward. Shift weight forward to L foot. 70% L, 30% R

Straighten R leg (don't lock it), bend L knee, L knee does not extend beyond L toe

Bring L hand forward in punch. At the same time bring R hand back to waist.
